MY JOURNEY WITH HIPPY
POSTED: 08th June 2018
A reflection from a HIPPY Tutor
Written by Barunaya Shnan......
Last year I enrolled my daughter with the Hippy program. With every time I received Hippy books and attended Hippy groups. I became more interested and I enjoyed the Hippy program. When I make a new friend, share ideas with other mothers, enjoying playing with my daughter and knowing more about my community's activity's.
Although I had my own job as an educator I found a lot of ideas from Hippy. I used them in my day care and I saw with every time in Hippy groups a strong relationship between Ann and her team. To be honest I was wishing to be one of them one day.
In the beginning of this year I was surprised to find out that Ann offered me to join the Hippy team. After one-month training and working with the Hippy team I realised that I had some problems. Firstly, I had a weakness in English because English is not my first language. Secondly teaching kids is different from teaching parents to be their kids own tutor and sometimes I forget what I learn from Ann in group training, so I fell that my confidence goes down and I start thinking maybe my group doesn't like me and that I'm not suitable for this job. But I like this job and the Hippy team, so I have to do something about it.
I talked to my husband and he encouraged me and said, "you are a very quick learner, you can do it".
So, I have to have a plan.
I observed where my weakness area was, and I worked on it.
Firstly, I talked to Kerns one of the tutors with me and I told her "please if you see me doing any mistakes please let me know so I can improve" and I also talked with my coordinator Ann and I also asked her how she saw I was doing my job, she encouraged me because she saw that I liked to learn. With my English I started reading my books before going to the group training and I found some words that were difficult to find in the dictionary. So, I made my own little dictionary. Then I asked my husband to help me with practising to Hippy books with him and he can do that activity with our daughter, so I can understand how to pass the information on to the parents. Now I completely understand what my problems were, and I am more confident to do my work.
